Abstract

Individuals’ opinions may be reformed after a discussion with their group members. Several studies show how group discussions changed individuals’ unethical behavior (Kocher et al., 2018; Fochmann et al., 2021) and giving behavior (Luhan et al., 2009). Here, we focus on how group composition and discussion affect individuals’ giving behavior to their outgroup. Specifically, we investigate whether the information about recipient’s identity or group composition changes individual’s giving behavior toward the outgroup, through an experiment. We use a within-subject design and allow participants to make individual and group decisions in a dictator game. We also change the group composition, i.e., whether the group involves an outgroup member or not, and whether the recipient's identity is known or not.
