Abstract

There have been increasing dislike and distrust between Republicans and Democrats in the US in recent years. Such affective polarization can be explained by social identity theory, but we know little about whether its underlying mechanism is preference-based and belief-based. We would like to conduct an experiment to distinguish between the two mechanisms of affective polarization, where we will use the 2022 Midterm Election as a proxy of political identity salience increase. We will apply two identification approaches: before vs after and an encouragement design. In the presentation, I’ll briefly talk about the setting and then mainly discuss potential treatments we would like to use in the experiment.
